Canadian Quality and Patient Safety Week (October 26-30, 2015)

Posted by CDHM INFO On August - 31 - 2015

We Listen We Learn We AdVANCE

“Safety includes all steps and or actions by a dental hygienist that will prevent harm, and if harm is present reduce or minimize the harm. This includes such things as infection control procedures, risk management strategies and ensuring competent delivery of dental hygiene services. Maintaining a culture of safety involves ensuring health and safety in the workplace, homes and communities. Safety goes beyond the direct relationship with the client and needs to include attention to personal wellbeing, and recognition of impaired abilities by the dental hygienists.

The CDHM strongly supports quality and patient safety week, and encourages all registrants to support these events. Make advancing patient safety one of your continuing competency goals.

The Manitoba Institute for Patient Safety (MIPS) is a dynamic new forum for promoting excellence in the area of patient safety. At the heart of healthcare is the patient, who has the right to safe, quality care. The goal of the institute is to be a leader in the area of patient safety by working with healthcare professionals, researchers and the community to raise awareness of patient safety issues and respond to those issues by encouraging research, collaboration, innovation and promoting best practices.

During Canadian Quality & Patient Safety Week, WRHA and Manitoba Institute for Patient Safety are partnering on two Patient Safety Forums on Tuesday, October 27 – one in the afternoon for healthcare staff and healthcare students and the other for the public in the evening. The events are sponsored by HIROC and 3M.

Donna Davis, Nurse, Mother, Canadian and International Patient Safety Advocate, shares the story of how she lost her son, Vance, due to care intended to save him in a Saskatchewan hospital. After Donna shares her son’s story, we will discuss her experience and its patient safety themes. What can we learn from Vance’s needless death? How can his story motivate us to advance patient and family centred care? Donna has a powerful impact on participants (see attached). Many leave ‘changed’ in that they carry Donna’s message back to their units and workplaces, helping to create a greater culture of patient and family centred care.
