PROCLAMATION OF THE DENTAL HYGIENISTS ACT INCREASES ACCESS TO DENTAL HYGIENISTS’ CARE
The Transitional Council of the College of Dental Hygienists of Manitoba (CDHM) is pleased to announce that The Dental Hygienists Act, passed December 2005, has come into force as of April 15, 2008, making Manitoba the 7th Canadian provincial jurisdiction in which dental hygienists are self-regulated.
The role of the new College will be to ensure that dental hygiene practitioners meet professional standards which qualify them to practice, to initiate a continuing competency program, and to handle complaints. The new extended practice dental hygienist will be able to provide clinical care as a collaborative primary health care provider in both private and public health care settings, including long-term care facilities, hospitals and designated oral health programs. Increasing access to oral health care by dental hygienists’ provides additional opportunities to help improve the oral and overall health of Manitobans.
