What kind of learning activities will the Continuing Competency Committee accept?

The Committee accepts a wide range of learning activities such as educational/seminars, online courses, advanced formal education, reviewing professional journals/articles, participation in study/journal clubs, dental hygiene videos or DVDs, professional activities/research, etc. The activities are selected based on the individual dental hygienist’s continuing competency goals, resources and learning preferences. There is the expectation that all learning will be based on current dental hygiene research and theory, and will be relevant to your dental hygiene practice. This will need to be documented and demonstrated in your CCR. You must show the Committee that you are remaining competent through continuous learning that relates to your practice.

Competency activities carried out within 24 months of the reporting period deadline (April 30th) will be considered eligible.

Will I be penalized if my goal is not met or partially met?

No, we realize that not all goals will be met by the deadline. If you are interested in pursuing that goal for next year you can, providing, that other activities are implemented to further accomplish your goal.

Can I have the same goal as the other dental hygienists in my office?

Yes. However, forms (CCRs or PARs) would be completed and submitted individually. The CDHM encourages group learning, as this would facilitate effective implementation of the new skills or knowledge gained.

What is the external feedback form and is it mandatory to use?

It is not mandatory. Self-directed assessment should increasingly rely on external sources. Discussions, questions and feedback from peers, employers, and clients provide excellent resources for identifying deficiencies, continuing competency goals and professional development opportunities.

I am on the practising register and will be going on the non- practising register, what are the CCP requirements?

All members on the practicing register as of the reporting deadline, April 30th of the current CCP year, must satisfy the required components of the CCP.

I am a non-practising DH and/or a new applicant, what are the CCP requirements for transfer to the register?

When applying for transfer from the Non-Practising Register to the Register of Dental Hygienists – Practising, members must provide evidence of completion of continuing competency requirements. One of the two following situations will typically apply (the CDHM reserves the right to make accommodations for members under unique circumstances):

  • Non-Practising members wishing to transfer to the Register of Dental Hygienists
    – Practising between May 1-October 31, are required to submit full CCP requirements
  • Non-Practicing members wishing to transfer to the Register of Dental Hygienists
    – Practising between November 1-April 30, are required to submit partial CCP requirements (one CCR/goal)

The above reporting policies will also apply to new members in their first reporting period.
